Duration: circa 6 minutes.

“This prelude was written for Alan Hacker who, with Matrix, premiered the version for three clarinets in 1973. The solo version, which may use tape delay or pre-recorded tape, was premiered by Keith Pearson who broadcast it on Radio 3 on 9 September 1976. It was first broadcast by Janet Hilton on Radio 4 Scotland on 20 July 1975.  The solo version was re-titled Prelude 9 in 1982, the version for three or more clarinets retaining the original title Solo for Clarinet(s)

Edward McGuire's Preludes form an ongoing series in which he hopes to include most instruments.”
